A printer’s active wattage is not an all-day energy reading. Enter a power and duration for each mutually exclusive mode. For example, 100 watts for one hour and 5 watts for the other 23 hours totals 0.215 kWh for that day. At an illustrative 0.20 currency units per kWh over 365 identical days, the modeled energy cost is 15.695 currency units.
Office equipment mode-by-mode energy cost
Enter mutually exclusive operating modes. Do not combine an entire day of sleep with active hours from the same day.
Hypothetical example: 100 W for 1 hour plus 5 W for 23 hours = 0.215 kWh/day.

Build a complete day without counting it twice
Use one line for each mode, such as active, ready, sleep or off with an actual nonzero off-mode draw if observed. Each hour belongs to only one mode. The calculator rejects a sum above 24 hours. If fewer hours are assigned, it shows a partial-day result and the unassigned hours; it does not assume those hours draw zero watts.
daily kWh = sum(mode watts × mode hours) ÷ 1,000
annual modeled cost = daily kWh × entered operating days × entered price per kWh
The day count is your chosen profile, not an automatic full year. If weekends differ, calculate a second profile and combine only their non-overlapping day counts. Metered energy over a representative period can be more informative than a single nameplate rating. Warm-up, cleaning and other transitions need representation in the measurement or time allocation.
Keep power, energy and certification values distinct
ENERGY STAR’s imaging-equipment criteria distinguish sleep-mode power from typical electricity consumption. Its product finder reports sleep watts and, where applicable, weekly TEC in kWh. Do not enter weekly kWh as watts. A certification test profile also does not establish your own hours, network setup or workload.
Use the inkjet and laser cost worksheet to compare supplies separately, or the laser-printer shortlist for equipment choices. No model wattages, tariffs, savings guarantees or purchase prices are supplied here.
Method and limits
This original worksheet sums entered watt-hours, checks the time budget and separates decimal kWh from cost. Numerical and browser checks cover overallocated time and partial days. We did not meter equipment. Sources checked October 15, 2026. Tax, standing charges, demand charges and tariff tiers are outside the entered flat-rate model.
